In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb?

This Week at GCMS:

The old saying of the month of March “coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb” seems to be holding true this year.  Hopefully, our wintery weather has run its course this year and spring is right around the corner.  I know that many are caught up in the excitement of the NCAA Tournament with the Cards and the Cats still in the running.  I even saw one West Virginia Mountaineer shirt today!  It is always an exciting time of year.

Staff Concerns:

Please remember all of those GCMS staff members who are dealing with health issues or who have family members with health issues right now.  Stacy Pierce did well with her surgery yesterday.  Angie Escue is getting ready for a surgery next week.  Sandy Blain broke her foot earlier this week.  I know that there are several others as well.  Please always remember your GCMS family.

Calendar:

I have a few notes about this year’s school calendar.  Students will be out for Spring Break the full week of April 6-10.  Election Day, May 19 has been designated as the makeup PLC Day, so that will be a staff only day.  Students’ last day of school will be May 29.  That will leave our staff with one makeup staff day and our closing day (which is just half a day for those who worked Back to School Night in July).  I would like to hear your input about which days to use for the makeup day and for closing day.  Memorial Day, Monday, May 25; Saturday, May 30; Monday, June 1; and Tuesday, June 2 are all possibilities.  If you have preferences about which days we use, let me know.  We won’t be able to please everyone, but maybe we can choose the dates that work best for most.  Thanks.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to the GCMS Beta Club for winning the State Service Award at the State Junior Beta Convention!  This is a testament to the hard work of our Beta students and their sponsor, Nancy Sims.  Also, Brooklyn Glasscock won first place in the State Beta Convention Spelling competition.  She will get to represent Kentucky at national competition.

Also, congratulations to the GCMS delegation to the Kentucky United Nations Assembly (KUNA).  The GCMS delegation was names a Delegation of Excellence.  Payton Abney was named Outstanding Delegate from Grayson County, and Shanna McClung was named Outstanding Media Representative.

The Sound of Music:

The KMEA Concert Festival is in full swing!  Our 6^th grade orchestra kicked things off in a big way yesterday by scoring straight distinguished ratings!  Our band ensembles and our other orchestra ensembles will be performing today, and our chorus will be performing next week.  I just heard that our 7^th/8^th grade band scored straight distinguished ratings today!  We are very proud of all of our music performance groups and their hard work and dedication.

Volleyball:

Tonight is our final home volleyball match of the season.  Come out and support our girls as they finish another great season.  They will be starting conference tournament play at Breckinridge County next week.  Go Lady Cougars!

Marching Through the Month

This Week at GCMS:

It’s been another great week at the greatest place on Earth this side of Disney!  The building is buzzing with activity, and I want to share a few notes as the week comes to a close. 

Good Luck:

I want to wish the best of luck to some students who will be representing GCMS at various competitions and conferences in the near future.  Our GCMS delegation to the Kentucky United Nations Assembly will be in Louisville today through Saturday presenting the nation of Zimbabwe.  I know that Melanie Manion and these students have worked hard in preparation for this year’s KUNA, and I wish them the very best!

Approximately 60 GCMS students will be competing in the annual Western Kentucky University History Contest on Friday at WKU.  Our students have been very competitive in recent years, and Grayson County Students have actually been first place winners more than once.  I appreciate the hard work of our social studies teachers and their students that allows them to be so competitive against the students of other middle schools from across the state (and a few from out of state).  Good luck!

Mrs. Nancy Sims will be taking a delegation of students next week to the state Junior BETA Convention.  These students have excelled academically to earn this privilege, and many will be involved in competitive events at the state convention.  I appreciate the work that Mrs. Sims has done to revive BETA at GCMS.  Best of luck to our BETA delegation as well.

Our GCMS band and orchestra ensembles will be performing at the annual KMEA Concert Festival.  I know that these groups have spent countless hours in practice and rehearsal, and I know that they will do a great job at festival!

Congratulations:

Congratulations to Ellen Thomas on her high school FPS team finishing 4^th in the state and qualifying for international competition which will be held this summer at Iowa State University.  Hard work pays off!

Student Voice Surveys:

Thank you for your flexibility in administering the student voice surveys the past several days.  I know that this is something of a disruption to our normal schedule, but hopefully, we will be able to garner valuable information about student opinions, perspectives, and thoughts.  We are all about continuous improvement at GCMS, and the student voice survey is just one more piece of information for us to draw from as we work to improve.

TELL Surveys:

At last check, we had 69 out of 70 certified staff members who have completed the TELL Survey.  This is by far the best percentage (over 98 %) of any school in the district.  Kim Dennis has done a great job in facilitating this process as GCEA building rep.  Let’s get that last “holdout” to complete their survey and send Kim out with 100 % in her last year at GCMS!  Thanks.

Student Growth Goals:

Post assessments for student growth goals should be completed by April 3.  GCMS Administrators will be meeting with teachers about progress on the goals after spring break.

School Calendar:

The Grayson County School Board recently announced that students' last day of school for this school year will be "no later than" May 29.  That is assuming that we do not miss any more days this year.  We are looking at the possibility of making up PLC Day on Election Day, May 19.  That would only leave Closing Day and one makeup staff day after May 29.  

Next School Year:

We have set the date for Back to School Night at GCMS.  We will have our open house on Tuesday, August 4 from 4:00-6:00.  I know that is a long way off, but we have to go ahead and set the date so we can coordinate with the other schools in the district.

Spring that Spring!

This Week at GCMS:

It has been great to be back in school this week after yet another round of winter weather!  Hopefully, the spring-like conditions will stay with us, and we can continue on with the business of teaching and learning.  I have a few notes to share as this week winds down.

College Fridays:

Tomorrow (March 13) will be our first “College Friday” of this school year.  At this time of year when so many of us go crazy over college basketball with the NCAA Tournament going on, we like to encourage students and staff to show support for their favorite college or university on Fridays.  Please encourage your students to show their support by wearing shirts, caps, or other clothing displaying their favorite school.  Students and staff may wear hats or caps without a hat sticker on Fridays during March as long as it has a college logo of some sort.  Go Toppers and Go Dores!

The Push-Up Challenge:

The March “Push-Up Challenge” has been going very well so far.  Mr. Morris, Mrs. Bratcher, and Mrs. Geary have set up a table each morning in the gym for students (and staff) to do push-ups, adding one each day.  Today was Day 11, and we have been impressed with a high level of participation so far!

Great Job Teams 5 and 6!

I was quite impressed with the recent Showcase Lessons in Teams 5 and 6.  Students and teachers were highly engaged in the learning process in every room that I visited during those two days.  In addition to the new peer observation process, this year’s Showcase Lessons have provided valuable opportunities for our teachers to get into colleagues’ classrooms and share strategies and learning ideas.  Great job!

Student Voice Surveys:

We will be starting our student voice surveys at GCMS tomorrow.  Please follow the schedule that Mrs. Pearl has provided.  I know that each team has gone over the vocabulary and meanings of survey items so that the students understand what is being asked.  We appreciate everyone’s efforts with this part of the TPGES program.

TELL Survey and PBIS Survey:

I would like for everyone to complete your TELL Survey and your PBIS Self-Assessment by this coming Monday afternoon if possible.  If you have not completed both surveys, please plan to stay after school on Monday to complete it.  This will be in lieu of our March faculty meeting.  Thanks.

Student Growth Goals:

Post assessments for Student Growth Goals should be completed by April 3.  Administrators will meet with each teacher after spring break concerning your students’ progress on this year’s SGG’s.  Nothing on SGG has to be in CIITS as of April 3, but please do have your post assessments completed and start analyzing your data. 

Observations:

I have enjoyed getting into LOTS of classrooms the past couple of weeks!  I have seen lots of great teaching and learning going on and am very encouraged by what I see.  I have also come to the conclusion that with all of the new requirements of PGES, that I want to get in a lot more formal classroom observations during the first semester next year.  The administration may set up a schedule next year to avoid having such a crunch during the months of February and March.

Old Man Winter Comes to Grayson County

This Week at GCMS:

It has been an interesting last couple of weeks to say the least!  We have gotten a small dose of what the New England states have been dealing with this winter, and I am thankful it was only a small dose.  It was great to get back in school this week, and I feel like we have had a very good week.  I have just a few notes to share as this week winds down.

Showcase Lessons:

We have two showcase lesson days coming up in the near future.  Team 5 will be having showcase lesson day on Wednesday, March 4, and Team 6 will be having showcase lesson day on Tuesday, March 10.  This is a great opportunity for our teachers to visit colleagues’ classrooms to observe different ways of doing things and different lesson strategies of teaching and learning.  Please mark your calendars and plan to visit during your planning period on those days.

Student Voice Surveys:

We are getting closer to time to conduct our student voice surveys at GCMS.  This is a brand new component of PGES that we will be doing for the very first time.  Mrs. Pearl has developed a schedule, and she has been sharing that with CSI groups this week.  We will have advisory groups to go over the questions to clarify vocabulary and understanding next week.

Backpack Food Program:

As you know, our Family Resource and Youth Services Center (FRYSC) works with the local Community Alliance to provide weekend foods for many students at GCMS.  Please make sure that these students always receive their food bags to take home.  There have been a few cases of students not getting their foods and then being without food over the weekend.   None of us ever want this to happen, so let’s all be very diligent about making sure that these students receive their food bags.  Thanks.

Attendance:

We have been having a higher than usual level of absenteeism lately, with both students and staff.  Please encourage your students to be here at school every day.  It is also crucial that our staff be here at school every day to work with our students.  We have some great substitute staff members, but it is the most benefit to our students to have our full time teachers and staff at school each day.  Let’s make it our goal to be here at school each and every day!

Staff Changes for Next Year:

It is that time of year to start thinking about staffing for next school year.  If any staff member has a change coming up, please let me know.  If you are planning to retire or otherwise leave GCMS, please let me know so I can plan accordingly for next year.  Of course, any resignation or retirement would need a written and signed letter of resignation.  Not trying to rush anyone out the door, but that paperwork is required before I can ask the central office to advertise a position.  Also, if anyone desires a change of assignment, please let me know.  I cannot always accommodate such requests, but it is helpful when I know that someone is interested in moving to a different grade level or different subject, etc.

No Phone, No Light, No Motor Car, Not a Single Luxury

We truly do take our modern technology for granted…until we are without it.  With internet down and our phones working on a very limited basis on Wednesday, we are reminded of just how dependent we are on technology.  I hear of schools and districts that claim to be going “paperless,” and I agree that we all need to move in that direction.  That notwithstanding, we must always have a plan B when our precious technology is on the fritz.  My word processor is working just fine on Wednesday afternoon, and I will put this edition of the Cougar Notes into the blog just as soon as internet is restored.  If my word processor breaks down, I also have a couple of pencils within arm’s reach!

I would like to wish the best of luck to our GCMS boys basketball team.  Our 8^th grade boys team will be competing in the middle school state tournament in Lexington this coming weekend!

I would also like to wish the best of luck to all of those students who will be competing in the annual Grayson County Spelling Bee.  This year’s bee is scheduled for Saturday, February 14 in the GCMS auditorium.

PLC Day (Monday, February 16):

There will be no school for students on Monday, February 16.  This will be the last PLC day of the school year for staff professional training.  We have a variety of activities planned for the staff that day and will try to send an agenda out as soon as we have it finalized. 

Balfour Rep at GCMS (date change):

Mr. Bush will be back at GCMS to take school ring orders on Wednesday, Feb. 18 during lunch.  Students who would like to order a ring should have their completed order form along with a $20 deposit that day.  Please note that this is a change from the original date that I mentioned in last week’s School Messenger call.

Parent/Teacher Conferences:

We had a nice turnout for parent/teacher conferences last night.  There were not as many parents in attendance as we had for the first semester conferences, which is to be expected this time of year.  I know that there were some good meetings and important conversations taking place as we enter a very important time of the year.  It is crucial that students and teachers do not let down in February and March, because the home stretch of the year is not that far away.  I encourage everyone to continue your hard work, and our students will benefit greatly!

Observations: (repeated from last week)

Teachers who still need to have formal classroom observations this year should contact the administrator in charge of your evaluation to schedule an observation date.  Remember, non-tenured teachers are required to have 2 minis, a peer, and a full observation.  Tenured teachers in your summative year (8th grade) are required a peer and a full.  We are scoring Domains 1 and 4 for all of those teachers.  Tenured teachers not in your summative year are required a mini observation only.  Those teachers should also be keeping up with documentation for Domains 1 and 4 and carry it forward for when your summative year rolls around.  Let me or one of the assistant principals know if you have questions about that process.  We would like to get several more completed in February, so there are not so many left for the last minute in March.

An Early Spring?

If old Punxsutawney Phil is an accurate prognosticator, we will be enjoying an early spring.  We have been very fortunate so far this winter, unlike folks in the northeast, and have enjoyed mild weather so far.  We are not out of the woods yet, but we have only missed one day of school so far.  Knock on wood that Phil knows what he is doing!  I have just a few notes to share this week.

Personnel Concerns:

Please remember Becki Pearl this week.  Becki’s father passed away this past week.  Karen Likins is still recovering from her recent surgery. Please remember all those who are dealing with health concerns right now.

Volleyball is Here!

Our GCMS volleyball season has started, and our girls are off to a good start.  Come out and see Coach Decker's and Coach Thomas' teams this season.  Our next home match is February 19.  

Parent/Teacher Conferences:

Our spring parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for this Tuesday evening from 4:00-6:00 pm.  This is a great opportunity to have conversations stressing the importance of keeping up effort levels as the school year winds down.  As always, please point out positives about each and every child and then address the areas for improvement as well.  We always need parents to understand that we are all on the same team and want every child to achieve at the highest levels possible.

Mr. Prunty shared with me this week that the attendance auditors noted that some middle school teachers were not posting their attendance in Infinite Campus for every period, each day.  Mrs. Wilson and I have reminded teachers repeatedly, but this continues to be an issue.  Please make it your new year’s resolution to post your attendance in IC every period, every day.  Thanks.

Attendance Contest:

Mr. Prunty is sponsoring a February attendance contest again this year.  The school in Grayson County with the highest percentage of improvement over February of last school year will win $1500.  Please encourage your students to be present each and every day in February.

What's Happening at GCMS

Time Keeps on Slippin, Slippin, Slippin…into the Future:

This old Steve Miller Band lyric sums things up pretty well.  On this, my son’s 21^st birthday, I think about how quickly time has passed.  It seems like he should still be a 4^th grader in Becky Miller’s class at Lawler instead of a junior at Vanderbilt.  The years have flown by since I started teaching school at GCHS 25 years ago.  Many things have changed in the school world, but some things have stayed the same.  Over the years, I have always been surrounded by great people who care deeply about kids.  That was true in 1990, and it is true in 2015.  This school year is ticking right on by as well.  I have just a few notes to share as the week winds down.

Dress for Success, a Great Success!

I was very pleased to see such a good level of participation for our first “Dress for Success Day”.  I could see pride on the faces of many of our students, who clearly felt good about themselves that day.  Thank you for encouraging this effort.  I know that many of you brought items from home to help students be able to participate.  We will do this again in the future!

Good Luck Cougars!

Good luck to the GCMS academic team at the Regional Governor’s Cup competition.  Our students will compete at Legrande Elementary School in Hart County on Saturday.

Good luck to our GCMS boys basketball teams as they compete in the conference tournament at Ohio County.  Our 7^th grade boys play on Thursday night, and if we win, we play in the championship on Friday night.  Our GCMS 8^th grade boys have already advanced to Friday’s championship game.

Welcome!

I would like to welcome some new employees to GCMS.  Jeffrey Skaggs has been hired as a new custodian for the evening shift, and Deanna Lasley has been hired as a new one-on-one aide, working with an 8^th grade student in Team 3.  Also, Anna Robinson is working as a part time aide with an ELL student in Team 1.  I know that you will make them all feel welcome at GCMS.

Second Annual Career Camp at GCMS:

I met with Cynthia Smith and the staff from the GC Tech Center after school yesterday, and we agreed upon February 17 as the date for this year’s Career Camp.  The Tech Center staff will be here to conduct demonstrations of their programs that day.  We will use a similar format to last year, with half the 8th graders going in the morning and half in the afternoon. Groups of about 25 students will rotate through 7 stations, spending about 20 minutes at each station learning about a particular program at each stop.  I will work up a schedule for the 8th graders to rotate through that day and send it out to you ASAP. 

High School Registration Info. from the GCMS Counselors: 

Mrs. Sims sent this information out to 8^th grade teachers recently:

On Friday, Jan 30th, representatives from various departments of the high school will be here to have a sort of “recruitment day” for our 8th graders during 2nd, 3rd, and 4th periods.  They will have tables set up in the gym, offering printed materials, etc from all departments for the students to have before registration.  I have reserved the auditorium for PE classes to meet in during this time.  There will also be an 8th grade Parent Info Night at GCHS on February 23rd.  There will be calls made to parents before the event.  High school counselors will be here on February 24, 25, and 26th to discuss the registration process with our students.  They will meet in the language arts or social studies core classes (team leaders please let me know which one you prefer), 1 day per team. They will meet with team 1 on Feb 24, Team 2 on the 25th, and team 3 on the 26th.  We ask that alphabetized registration forms be turned in to me or Leann by March 6th.  Please let me know of any questions.  Thank you.

Lockdown Procedure:

Our recent lockdown drill went very well.  We had about 10 local police officers present to assist us with the drill, and they were very complimentary of our students and staff.  One item that we have agreed to change is the duration of the emergency tone.  From now on, when we sound the lockdown tone or the tornado tone, we will only let it sound for about two minutes, and then we will cut it off.  When the tone stops, that DOES NOT end the lockdown or tornado procedure.  Classes will remain under lockdown until a police officer or a school administrator unlocks your door.  A tornado procedure would continue until the all clear is sounded or announced.

Cougar Bucks:

The Cougar Book Store has been receiving a lot of Cougar Bucks lately with no student name on them.  In some cases, a student from one grade has cashed in Cougar Bucks from a teacher of a different grade. While it’s not impossible that a case like that is legitimate, it is unlikely.  Please always make sure that someone puts the student’s name on the buck. If it isn’t realistic for the teacher to do it, just train your students to write their own name on there right when they receive the buck.  Thanks.
